How to Store Ginger

Updated: Feb 24, 2020

I love ginger. It has many uses both as a culinary and medicinal herb. The thing is, fresh ginger has a short shelf life. It gets mushy and slimy rather quick and it's also difficult to grate and chop due to its fibrous texture.

I make the most of my fresh ginger by peeling it, chopping it into 1 inch pieces, and freezing it! This extends the shelf life up to 6 months ot so. This simple trick makes it so easy to add the warmth and power of fresh ginger to your recipes, teas, decoctions, syrups, and tincures.Simply pull it out of the freezer, grab a chunk or two, and grate it on a microplane or box grater (if needed). You will be amazed at how easy it is to grate in a frozen state! I usually buy ginger in bulk when it's on sale and replenish my freezer supply every few months. Ginger is so healthful and tasty that I always like to have it on hand.

I hope you enjoyed this quick tip! Thanks for stopping by.
